Hip-hop is a genre of popular music that originated in African American and Latinx communities in the Bronx, New York City in the 1970s. It typically features rhythmic and rhyming speech patterns over a beat, with a focus on themes such as urban life, social and political issues, and personal experiences. Hip-hop music has since spread throughout the world and has evolved into many sub-genres, including but not limited to gangsta rap, conscious rap, and trap music.
